Notes: 1989 Vallein Tercinier

1989 Vallein Tercinier - Grande Champagne 30 yr. Single Cask "Juicy" - T5C & Flask - 48.4%

Vallein Tercinier has a history of over 500 years growing/producing cognac. They release cognac from multiple crus and likely use a mix of sourcing and growing their own grapes. Vallein Tercinier was ahead of the pack in terms of release single casks of unadulterated, higher proof vintage cognac and has built a nice reputation among us spirit nerds. This cask was selected by a private barrel picking group in conjunction with Flask Fine Wine & Whisky.

Notes: Solid definition and a pleasantly fruity profile on the nose. Waxy strawberry - chapstick, strawberry candy. Under roasted chestnut. Cantaloupe. Lemon. Jammy berries. Palate delivers BIG fruity action on the back end. Slow to build with nondescript fruit sugars and wood. Then an explosion of melon and citrus - touch of varnish. Structure is light but super active. Finish is long and dry.

Pour This For: Tequila reposado fans. You'll need to opt for fruit forward distillate. I'm thinking Los Altos, old school El Tesoro or Tequila Ocho here - Carlos Camarena's overripe agave and light touch with oak. Vegetal, earthy, or even lighter but overtly floral profiles wouldn’t transfer as well here.

Score: 8 (Stash One) Structure is a touch off balance with all the backloaded action. But when it pops, it pops. The notes gain clarity and are thoroughly enjoyable through and through.
