Corrido Blanco - 1st Release - NOM 1439 - 40%
The first Corrido release was contracted out of Proveedora y Procesadora de Agave Tres Hermanos, NOM 1439; made by Cesar Gonzales Ruiz utilizing autclaves, copper pot stills, single estate highland agave, distiller cultivated yeast, closed tank fermentation, and American oak aging that involved re-racking (shifting the distillate between barrels like the wine industry). The founder was Brad Hoover, by all accounts an infectious, passionate personality. After he died suddenly, a year into the launch, the brand went bankrupt. In 2019, it was relaunched by his niece, Sarah Foote. New master distiller, Ana Maria Romero is still using highland agave, natural fermentation (w/classical music, a touch that keeps popping up these days), well water, and low pressure autoclave. The anejo uses multiple barrels for aging, including Mexican merlot. I haven't had the pleasure of trying the new juice.
Nose: Lights-out. Lime Popsicle. Love this. I get this note in old Corazon long necks. Wet cave. Anise. Baked notes under all this. Massive depth.
Flavor: Lime again, evolving nicely - builds in brightness and intensity. Hard candy lime to compliment the Popsicle above. Mild chili powder. Fresh lime now. Tropical fruits - pineapple. Earthy/industrial notes in the finish.
Structure: Composed - a slow unspooling. Finish cycles twice with crisp minerality. Way, way late there was some cinnamon.
Alcohol Integration: This drinks with the structural complexity of 100 proof mezcal. Blind, with this mouthfeel, I’d guess +46% ABV. Nicely done.
Score: 9 (Stash Two) Sucks being late to the party, right? Fantastic fruit forward blanco that retains muscle and complexity.
