Review: 2003 Inchmurrin 14 yr "Executive"

Updated: Jan 22

2003 Inchmurrin 14 yr - WhiskyNerds “The Executive” - 54.6%

My first WhiskyNerds bottling. Also my first Inchmurrin - one of the ~8 spirit styles produced at the Loch Lomond distillery most of which are used as blending components. Always fun when these character driven malts are showcased in an independent bottling instead of their usual supporting role in blends. Inchmurrin is produced on a unique still that has rectifying plates installed at the top of the pot still providing the opportunity for greater reflux, a wider range of customization, and a higher distillation proof - like a hybrid pot and column still.

This bottling is certainly a fun one. WhiskyNerds released a bourbon matured Inchmurrin "Order" and a sherry matured version "Law." "Executive" was a blend of those two well received casks.

Nose: Fruit bomb. Fresh strawberries and oranges. Toffee. Pineapple. Smoke. Char. Lemon. Marshmallow. Soft grain. Notes unfolded longer than I could inhale.

Flavor: Strawberry cream. Citrus. Bright tropical fruits. Sharp char and ash, transitioning into a boat load of more intense tropical fruits - mango, pineapple, kiwi. Definitely finds a second gear with the fruit. Char, ash, and tropical fruits trade on and off for a long duration before reintroducing the marshmallow.

Structure: Soft, slow, and deep. Then dynamic and long. Lots of high action mid and into the finish. Then really long as it dips back down. You'll think it's done. It's not done.

Alcohol Integration: Didn't need it, but I added a drop of water to the last bit. Killed the fruit on the nose. Shaved off some of the dynamic mid-palate action. Didn't seem to provide any benefit. Keep away from water.

Score: 10 (Reevaluate the Budget) I'd run the numbers.

You May Also Dig:

If I had a good adjunct here, I wouldn't need to reevaluate the budget. But plenty of these notes (all the fruit and toffee) are what make older cognacs attractive malternatives.
