Lheraud 30 yr. - Grande Champagne

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

Lheraud 30 yr. - Grande Champagne - (2004) - 44%

Context: Reading Ryan's experience with Lheraud and specifically their marketing/packaging over at Pleb Yak reminded me fondly of the skeptical consumerism my father instilled in me. Anything too flashy was mere seconds away from corrosion. If they offered you 15% off, they had probably quietly marked up the price 2 months ago. Most of that skepticism has served me well especially with spirits. So it was a pleasant twist to see, in Ryan's case, that the charm of the presentation came together with the juice for something special (likely in no small part thanks to Lheraud not adding color, boise, or sugar). That impression lines up nicely with Opening A Bottle's suggestion that Lheraud's packaging is less marketing and more a stubbornness to change, "a fat middle finger to our rushed way of modern life." A jab at the computerization of the cognac industry. I have yet to experience the packaging and presentation, but two write-ups in: ISO handwritten letters.

Let's see how this Lheraud drinks from the clear Boston Round - the humblest of Boston Rounds.

Nose: This is old and rotty in great ways. Damp timber. Fungal. Over-ripe melon. Mango. There’s some dried fruit behind it - dates. Really into this.

Flavor: Fat up front. Brighter in profile than the nose. Lots of candied fruit. Mango. Vanilla. Finish is soft and layered. Slightly herbal and grassy with some grape juice.

Structure: It's an easy, gentle ride. No seat belt required. Does the notes justice without getting in the way.

Alcohol Integration: Right in the sweet-spot.

Score: 9 (Stash Two) Hits on all levels. Richness, balance, clarity. Profile bullseye for my palate. I’m happy there are more samples coming. If they're anything like this, I'll have to spring for the full experience.

All I can really say is just try more Lheraud.
