I haven't sat down and reviewed any malt for a minute. Fortunately, a buddy sent me a handful of mysteries to knock the rust off before I dig into some scotch reviews. For this series, I'll share the tasting notes and score with my buddy when I request the reveal.
Notes: Marshmallow and barrel vanillas, apple/peach/pear: great, well-aged, ex-bourbon nose. Very integrated. Dialed in between 100-110 proof. Structure is light and linear, playing bright on the palate. Orchard fruits again. Soft, lightly smoked grain. Finish medium and active. Palate moves quickly and plays a touch hot.
With Water: Creamier on entry. Aromatic barrel vanillas now translate to the palate, elongating the development and improving the structure, while better integrating transitions The trade-off is more wood than I'd like on the nose. Still I prefer the pour with a drop or two of water.
Great distillate. Maybe be pulled a year or two early.
Guess: 10-12 year Bruichladdich - ex-bourbon 53%
Score: 7 (Recommend) Love the orchard fruits. The palate could use some composing. All in all, a very fun pour.
